What is a Continuous Blood Glucose Monitor?
As the name suggests, a continuous blood glucose monitor provides continuous information regarding the concentration levels of sugar (glucose) in the user’s blood. The information that is received from a continuous glucose monitor is not based on direct assessment of the blood glucose, but rather it is based on an assessment of the “interstitial fluid”. Interstitial fluid is the fluid that is in between the cells just beneath the skin.
Continuous blood glucose monitors typically two primary components. The first component is a transmitter. Placed on the surface of the skin, the transmitter contains a sensor, which is effectively a needle that penetrates a small portion of the skin. The second component is the receiver, which displays information provided from the transmitter and sensor.
The benefit of the continuous blood glucose monitor is that the user can receive real-time information regarding blood glucose levels without having to perform multiple sticks. Because the sensor of the continuous blood glucose monitor is reading interstitial fluid, however users still need to check the accuracy by checking their blood sugar (glucose) levels with a standard monitor from time-to-time.
